Here at Eckels Orthodontics, not only do we provide top orthodontic care for the residents of Parkersburg, WV, as well as Marietta, OH, and the greater Mid-Ohio Valley, but we also take pride in our commitment to serving our community for the better. That is why our orthodontist, Dr. Scott Eckels, takes part in Smile For A Lifetime, a non-profit charitable foundation with chapters throughout the country that provides orthodontic treatment to patients who may not have the opportunity to achieve beautiful, straight smiles without financial assistance.
Launched in 2008, Smile For A Lifetime aims to reach individuals with financial challenges, special situations, and unique orthodontic needs. The foundation sponsors orthodontic care to hundreds of patients every year. In 2010, Dr. Scott Eckels founded a local Mid-Ohio Valley chapter of Smile For A Lifetime. Since then, he has offered his services to give free orthodontic care to children ages seven through 18 who face financial and family challenges that prevent them from affording treatment otherwise.
The Smile For A Lifetime Foundation asks each local chapter to treat six patients per year. Dr. Eckels has chosen to treat 24 patients per year, donating 100% of the orthodontic care. He knows that a beautiful, healthy smile can bring self-confidence and the ability to accept life's challenges and opportunities. His hope is that the children who receive treatment through the Smile For A Lifetime can become leaders with the potential to have a positive impact on their community.
Many of the scholarship recipients have additional dental needs, such as prophylaxis, restorations, extractions, etc. Several area dentists have committed to partner with Dr. Eckels to provide dental care at reduced or no cost to the foundation.
There is an application process to participate, which includes income verification, a photo of the applicant, and two letters of recommendation. Every four months, a local Board of Directors meets to review each application and select scholarship recipients. The board, comprised of a diverse group of active members of the community, considers financial and orthodontic need, extenuating family circumstances, and the overall character of the applicant.
